Our Land project stories

Project 1) Re-routing a broken trail

Reconnecting a segment of trail falling into the Minnesota River.

A small property has recently been acquired by Parks & Trails Council (P&TC), which will reconnect a segment of the Minnesota Valley State Trail that is falling into the Minnesota River. This parcel, adjacent to the state trail, was identified as an adequate option to move the trail to higher ground instead of filling in the riverbank. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) enlisted the assistance of P&TC to locate the owner of the land and negotiate a deal. However, figuring out exactly who owned this parcel was more difficult than anticipated.

After digging deeper into the title, P&TC discovered that the owner was a company called Hawkeye Land II Co. Based in Iowa, Hawkeye purchased another company that owned several rail lines in Minnesota, but they were not aware that they owned this specific parcel. With the plans to re-route the broken Minnesota Valley State Trail, this acquisition provides incredible recreational value. It will not only save the trail from being severed, but it will also allow people to use the trail year-round.
