Heart of the Lakes Trail closes a gap in the state and regional trail system in Otter Tail County

The new trail connects Perham, Pelican Rapids, and Maplewood State Park.

A highly anticipated paved trail in west-central Minnesota is nearing completion. The Heart of the Lakes Trail will stretch 13 miles from Pelican Rapids to Perham, passing through Maplewood State Park and around the popular McDonald Lakes Chain of Lakes.

Most trail segments are already open for public use, and the 3.8-mile segment within Maplewood State is partially open and expected to be fully open later this fall. The trail will connect residents from these communities to the park, while park visitors will have the opportunity to bicycle into town. Inside the park, the trail winds through stunning landscapes, offering an invaluable outdoor recreation experience.

Activities allowed on the trail include biking, hiking, jogging, dog walking, skating, and snowmobiling on certain segments during winter. Named for the many lakes in Otter Tail County, the Heart of the Lakes regional trail provides scenic views of lakes and countryside in west-central Minnesota.

The development of the Heart of the Lakes Trail arose from community interest in expanding non-motorized recreation opportunities in the county. Otter Tail County Board presented plans at several public open houses, informing the community and inviting feedback. The public was then able to share their opinions on the trail proposal and suggest alternatives the board may not have considered.
