The Casey Jones State Trail is named after the famed railroad engineer Casey Jones, who heroically sacrificed his life to try and stop an out-of-control-train in 1900.

One segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail connects Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Once completed, the trail will also connect to Temperance River State Park.
