What makes natural scenery beautiful? There are many answers to that question, but geology is often part of the answer.
In this presentation on Minnesota’s scenic North Shore, Dr. Fitz will share ideas and photographs of how the geology of the region underlies much of its awe-inspiring beauty.
Geology is intriguing at all scales — from vast landscapes down to microscopic mineral grains. Learning about the geologic stories hidden within our landscapes can lead to an even deeper appreciation of their beauty.
Join us to learn more about the dramatic history that gave us the stunning, rocky scenery along Minnesota’s North Shore.
Dr. Tom Fitz is a professor of Geoscience at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. His passion and skill at teaching geology has converted many a non-geologist over to the rock side. He teaches a wide range of geology courses, with expertise in earth materials (minerals, rocks, sediments, soils) and earth history. Tom holds a PhD from University of Delaware, MS from University of Minnesota–Duluth, and BS from St. Lawrence University.
