Program Change: “Gifted Hands: Ho-Chunk Black Ash Splint Basketry”
Paul Wiste will be joining us to share his knowledge of Ho-Chunk Black Ash splint basketry, a craft that has been practiced by Ho-Chunk people since at least the 19th century. The talk will include information on the construction of the baskets, area basket makers, and the ways in which Ho-Chunk people marketed the baskets to non-native people. A selection of baskets from the Wiste’s personal collection will be available for viewing.
