NSTT Itasca walk/bike events promise a good time in September!
Join NorthStar Trail Travelers for three events at Itasca State Park from September 13-15. We will offer a bike event all three days, and two separate walks on Saturday and Sunday. Bikers can choose to do a short ride between the Headwaters and Douglas Lodge (10km), or they can embark on the Wilderness Trail around the park (26km). Bikers may sign up at the registration area on Saturday or Sunday, or if you want to ride on Friday, contact Donna (612-402-5016) to register. There will be no NSTT trail signs on the bike event, just follow park signs.
At 5 p.m. Friday, we’ll have a special presentation at the Forest Inn by Connie Cox, Itasca Naturalist. “Greetings From Itasca! Stories Revealed from Postcards Sent Home” will look back on the beauty of postcards and the stories they reveal about Itasca State Park. Before social media, postcards were a way to share your Itasca State Park adventure with family and friends. Enjoy this PowerPoint presentation as we explore old postcards from Itasca State Park. The interesting captions on the back capture the spirit of the scenes depicted on the front. Hear the voices from the past, as we share special messages written on the back by the person who sent the postcard.
Saturday, September 14, we’ll register for our walk at the picnic shelter. You’ll have lots of choices for trails there. We’ve tried to mark the trails to enable everyone to be able to walk over to the Headwaters, as well as continue on Schoolcraft Trail, the Burial Grounds, the historic Sawmill, Wegman’s Store, the Museum and the Headwaters Inn. There’ll be plenty to see on any of the trails and you can walk a 2km up to a 10km. We haven’t done any of these trails in past events, so everything will be new … and lots of interesting things to see along the way.
At the end of the day we’ll host a Hobo Soup Supper at the picnic shelter! Bring something to add to the pot — canned goods, meat or veggies — and a dish to share — snacks, breads, salads or desserts — and your own beverages. Finish the day off with a chance to visit with all your walking friends.
Sunday, September 15, we’ll be walking the south end of the lake, down by Douglas Lodge. The registration area has changed from Forest Inn to the Club House. The park approved our use of the picnic area in the back yard for Sunday registration. Sunday’s walk will take you down to Mary Lake, over to the Aiton Heights fire tower, through a bog and by the Oldtimer’s Cabin on the Dr. Roberts Trail. Park in the Douglas Lodge lot and walk around the Lodge to the bridge to the Club House.
Updates will be sent via email reminders and any big changes will be noted on our webpage, nstt.org.
