The Friends of Minnehaha Park is looking for nature and outdoor lovers, civic-minded individuals, people from all backgrounds with passion and vision and people willing to share their talents and time fulfilling key roles within the board in support of our mission.

We are currently seeking up to 4 individuals interested in joining our board of directors for two-year terms beginning January 1, 2025. The FMP is a dynamic working board that is making major advances in organizational development and design and implementation of programs, activities and partnerships aligned with the mission since our inception in April 2023. This is an opportunity to play an important role in our development as we grow from our early stage into a mature organization.

Mission:

The Friends of Minnehaha Park will provide stewardship and advocacy for Minnehaha Regional Park, engage with the community to respect and learn about the environmental and cultural history of the park, and partner with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and community to foster public engagement in restoring and sustaining the natural environment.

General Responsibilities:

  • Attend monthly board and committee meetings (primarily by Zoom) and functions, such as special events
  • Stay informed about the organization’s mission, services, policies and programs
  • Serve as lead in a functional area
  • Serve on a committee and the nominating committee
  • Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing the organization’s annual financial statements
  • Promote the organization and the mission of FMP with the public

Board Member Expectations:

  • Understand and uphold the FMP mission
  • Review agenda and supporting documents prior to board meetings
  • Participate in fundraising and development activities by whatever means
  • Participate in the field events as able (educational, buckthorn slaying, planting, etc) at the park
  • Board members are encouraged to make a personal annual gift to the Friends, as able
  • Ensure social media posts and communications are consistent with mission
  • Protect confidential information
  • Exercise Duty of Care, etc. as outlined in the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Fiduciary Duties of Directors of Charitable Organizations

Term and Time Commitment:

Board members serve a 2-year term and may serve additional terms. The board meets by Zoom monthly, day and time TBD by mutual availability and as needed beyond that. The group typically hosts three to six informational events per year, coordinates ongoing monthly public nature walks and conducts 12-36 volunteer stewardship events per year. Expected time commitment per board member is 5-10 hours per month.

We welcome self-nominations, as well as recommendations of people you think would make excellent board members. (No prior board service or specific experience required! )

The names of candidates will be forwarded to the Nominating Committee and recommendations will be sent to be voted on and confirmed by the Board by the December Board Meeting. Applicants not recommended for a board position may join one or more volunteer committees.
