Minnesota’s climate can be unpredictable – cold and wet one year, hot and dry the next.

Join Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails on Tuesday, June 13, 7-8pm to learn about raingardens and rainwater harvesting with Angie Hong, coordinator of the East Metro Water Education Program.

Raingardens are typically situated along roadways or near the bottom of a downspout, and their job is to catch and hold rainwater until it soaks into the ground, is taken up by the plants, or evaporates. Raingardens help to reduce runoff water pollution and also replenish shallow groundwater aquifers. They also create pockets of habitat for birds and pollinators.

Angie will talk about how to design raingardens, what plants to use, and where to find grants and other resources to get started. She’ll also share advice on harvesting rainwater with rain barrels and cisterns.

Angie Hong coordinates the East Metro Water Education Program, a local government partnership with 30 members in Chisago, Isanti and Washington Counties – www.mnwcd.org/emwrep. Read her tips and tales about keeping water clean at www.eastmetrowater.org or follow her on TikTok and Instagram @mnnature_awesomeness.
